Wout Van Aert named Tour's most combative athlete

Wout Van Aert added another award to his and Jumbo Bisma's list Saturday afternoon when the selection committee awarded him the title of "Super Combattif," the most combative rider in the Tour, after he won his third stage victory at the 2022 Tour de France.

This accomplishment came after three weeks of exciting performances by the 27-year-old Belgian.

Over the past three weeks, Van Aert has been consistently on the run, rolling the dice on several big runs.

Van Aert won daily combat awards on stages 6 and 18. In the former, he attacked early and often while wearing the yellow jersey, eventually establishing the day's main breakaway, which he held off until the last few kilometers. In the latter, he again set up an early break on one of the Tour's most difficult stages, spending most of the day at the front and digging deep for Jumbo-Visma teammate Jonas Vingegaard, who lost Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) on the final climb.

The team's three stages of the race were a sprint win on stage 4, a solo victory after a battle for the win on stage 8, and a time trial win on stage 20.

On Saturday, after his third stage win, the selection committee decided that Van Aert deserved the title of "Super Combat." As a result, he was awarded €20,000 in addition to the various prizes he had won.

The success of Van Aert and overall winner Vingegaard means that Jumbo Visma has gained considerably in this Tour. Barring some sort of catastrophe on Sunday's final sprint stage to Paris, the Dutch team will finish the race with the yellow, green, and polka-dot jerseys, the combativeness prize, and at least six stage wins.
