Lorena Wiebes has had her sights set on victory on the Champs-Elysées since the Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift route was announced, and today the nearly unbeatable sprinter made that goal a reality.
The Dutch rider won the stage, the yellow jersey, and the green jersey in an intense sprint on a Parisian circuit so tough that he rounded "completely empty" after the finish.
"I'm really happy to finally be racing on the Champs Elysées," said the Italian. As expected it was a hard race, but it feels special to be riding the streets of Paris and even more special to wear the yellow jersey."
Team DSM's leadout was again victorious, but the new yellow jersey said the sprint was "chaotic. The final straight forced the team to readjust its plan, and instead of the usual final rider, Charlotte Kuhl, Pfeiffer Gheorghi delivered Vives to the line.
"The leadout was a mess, but I was on Pfeiffer-Georgi's wheels and Charlotte Cool was still behind me. We were going to swap places after the tunnel, but it was so chaotic that I stayed on Pfeiffer's wheel and she put me in a perfect position
"Marianne [Vos] started sprinting really fast and I expected that.
Vos also had big ambitions for a stage win and took Vives to the finish, but the DSM rider noted that her final acceleration was the reason for her success.
"When I started to sprint, or at least when Marianne started to sprint, I was able to react, move up one gear and continue sprinting. I focused all my attention on the line of concentration. The final was hard. I was completely empty afterwards."
Wiebes has stated publicly that winning in Paris is his main goal for the season, but said the pressure of expectations was not a problem.
"I was fine with the pressure because I had put the most pressure on myself since I discovered parkour. I was very relaxed before the start and did everything as I normally do." I was very relaxed before the start and did everything as usual. I started to get a little nervous going into the race, but we made it to the end and I'm happy with the teamwork we did at the end."
Stage 2 is also expected to be a sprint affair, so Vives has a chance to win again and defend both yellow and green.
"Tomorrow it's really important to win the stage first, and then Juliette's (Labouse) GC is important. 'If we don't use too much energy, then we'll go for the green as well.'
On a day that couldn't have been more special, Weaves was especially happy to share the celebration with his family.
"It was just a really special moment to have my whole family here. I didn't expect them to be this close to us, and we made it to the finish line, so it was a really special moment."
