Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the President of the United States, watched the Zwift revival of the Tour de France Femmes and said it was "the most amazing spectacle I have seen in 33 years."
"What a great first stage of @LeTourFemmes.
Dr. Biden is referring to the women's Tour de France, which was organized by the former Tour de France association from 1984 to 1989 and won its first edition with American Marianne Martin competing for Team USA.
Martin was inducted into the Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in a ceremony at USA Cycling's headquarters in Colorado last November 6, a month after the route for this year's Tour de France femme was announced.
In an interview with Cycling News, Martin said it was an honor to be accepted into the USA Cycling Hall of Fame nearly 40 years after winning the coveted yellow jersey.
"I'm very proud and very excited. My family has traveled from all over the country to be here," Martin told Cycling News at the time.
"I feel like I've had more press coverage in the last five years than I did right after I won. It's in my heart and I'm very proud of that win, but it's a personal thing and I'm proud of that accomplishment whether anybody else knows about it or not."Greg LeMond became the first American to win the Tour de France in 1986 and also won the title in 1989 and 1990. Lemon was inducted into the U.S. Cycling Hall of Fame in 1996 and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2020.
On Sunday in Paris, ASO welcomed the women's peloton back to the Tour de France and its spotlight with an eight-day, 1,029-km race from July 24 to 31.
Six riders from the United States will compete in the Tour de France Femmes: EF Education-TIBCO-SVB's Emily Newsom, Krista Dobel-Hickok, Veronica Ewers, Kristen Faulkner (Team Bike Exchange-. Jayco), Leah Thomas (Trek-Segafredo), and Lily Williams (Human Powered Health).
"Good luck to @lily_bwilliams from Florida and all the cyclists competing this week," Dr. Biden wrote.
