Marlen Reusser misses Tour de France Femme with concussion

Team SD Walks announced late Friday that Marlen Reusser will miss Saturday's Tour de France stage 7.

The stage 4 winner was involved in a crash during Friday's 128-km ride from Saint-Dier-des-Vos to Rossheim, and after a medical examination following the finish of stage 6, it was determined that he could not continue racing.

"After examination at the hospital, it was determined that he suffered a concussion after the crash. He will need rest to recover. Reusser was an important part of Team SD Works.

In stage 6, the teams were mixed, with Christine Majerus joining the early breakaway and sprinter Lotte Kopecky fighting back for the podium. Kopecký, along with Lorena Vives (Team DSM), Alena Amialiushik (Canyon-SRAM), and teammate Reusser, were involved in a crash with less than 23km to go. Kopecký chased down the peloton and finished third in Rossheim, where race leader Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) took the win.

Other riders chased as well, but did not join the lead group of 39 who contested the group sprint. Amiariusik finished just over a minute behind, Vives 7:34 behind Vos, and Reusser 15:10 behind.

"I think Lorena hit the front wheel. It happened so fast that she didn't have time to react anymore and she went completely flying. I hit my head hard, but I'm okay," Kopecky said. Kopecký has four top-10 finishes in the six stages of this Tour.

"I was feeling pretty good today and I wanted to sprint. I don't know if that effort affected my sprint. The crash gave me an adrenaline rush. Plantur-Pra helped me get back into it. I knew there were only two short climbs left. So I fought to come back."

Reusser proved his strongest on stage 4, winning the gravel road to Bar-sur-Aube solo. He attacked from the lead group on the last two gravel sections to take the stage win.

At the Tour de France Femme, he was in the top 20 with three of his teammates for a weekend of tough climbs. Ashley Moolman-Pasio is fifth overall, 1:05 behind Vos in the maillot jaune, Demi Volering is sixth overall, another six seconds behind, and Kopecký is 17th overall, over four minutes behind.

"It was a very fast stage, but we came together well as a team. Demi Vollering and I are in good shape. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow," Mourman-Pasio said of the team's situation ahead of the mountains.
