Trek-Segafredo failed to make the GC podium at the Tour de France Femme, but the team's youngest rider, Shirin van Anuloy, took the jersey and offered a glimpse into the future.
Van Anuloy was part of the Dutch jersey sweep, finishing 17th on the tough stage 7 course. This gave the 20-year-old a lead of more than five minutes over Misha Bredewald (Parkhotel Valkenburg), who finished second in the youth category. But even that gap was not enough to make it easy through the 123.5-km final stage, which ends with a brutally steep finishing slope at the top of La Super Planche des Belle Filles.
"Today was a very hard day for me," said the team leader.
Bredewald struggled to stick to Van Anului's wheel, but was unable to keep pace, let alone close the gap.
"Until the summit, we just had to survive," van Anrooy said in a team statement. 'I really wanted the white jersey today, I was just fighting.'
Supporting Trek-Segafredo overall contender Elisa Longo Borghini, van Ambrooy finished the final stage in 22nd place.
"It was my first long stage race and very hard. It was really cool to race with Elisa (Longo Borghini) for her. In the end I got the white jersey and I learned a lot. I think I grew a lot in this Tour."
He said.
Van Ambrooy, who has a contract with Trek-Segafredo through the end of 2025, has clearly shown his potential this year with a string of top-20 finishes in top-class races and top-10 finishes in other races like Strade Bianche and the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas. He has clearly shown his potential. But he needs a few more seasons of development before he can turn the white jersey into the yellow one at the Tour de France Femme.
"Right now I want to enjoy this jersey. I want to grow step by step and one day, in a few years, I want to aim for yellow," van Ambrooy said.
