After a stunning victory at the U23 Giro d'Italia, Britain's Leo Hayter has signed his first professional contract with Ineos Grenadiers, along with his brother Ethan.
Hayter, 20, will join Ineos Grenadiers as a stagiaire (trainee) for the remainder of this season before officially turning pro on the World Tour at the start of 2023.
Hayter has signed a three-year contract with the British team through 2025. He is the first new player for the Ineos Grenadiers.
"I am very proud and excited to step up to the highest level of the sport and join the Ineos Grenadiers next year with a British team that has inspired me since I started competing," Hayter said.
Leo Hayter will be part of Team DSM's development squad in 2020 and 2021 and won the U23 Liege Bastogne Liege last year.
Hayter recently told Cycling News that he is still unsure what type of athlete he will be on the World Tour, noting that he can do anything but not finish as fast as his brother.
He won the U23 British time trial title in June in dominating fashion after winning a brutal mountain stage at the U23 Giro.
He was plagued by health problems for the first half of the season and was only a reserve rider for the Giro, but he won the Queen stage by more than five minutes to take the overall win.
Already attracting interest from WorldTour teams, his Giro victory put him in a luxury position to determine his future. He already had a strong relationship with Ineos Grenadiers.
"Having attended the team's training camp, I already feel at home here.
Hayter is Ineos' first signing of 2023, continuing a recent trend of investing in young talent.
Tom Pidcock, Ethan Hayter, Carlos Rodriguez, Luke Plapp, Ben Tallet, and Magnus Sheffield are among the promising youngsters who have joined over the last few years.
Leo Hayter is seen as an important part of the team's future.
"Over the past few years, we have focused on identifying exciting young talent and developing them into world-class bike racers," said Deputy Team Principal Rod Ellingworth. [Leo is one of our very talented young riders and has already shown impressive performances in the under-23 Giro. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to watching him evolve as a rider over the next few years."
