Filippo Ganna and Ineos Grenadiers sign four-year contract extension.

Time trial world champion Filippo Ganna has signed a four-year contract extension with Ineos Grenadiers.

The 26-year-old will join Ineos Grenadiers in 2019 and has developed into one of the best time triallists in the world. He recently made his Tour de France debut, but his planned hour record attempt on the track has been postponed until later this year or possibly 2023.

Ganna was under contract through 2023, but had already attracted interest from other teams, including Trek-Segafredo.

Ineos Grenadiers renewed their roster by signing talented young players, including 2023 Giro Baby winner Leo Hayter. Richard Kalapas will go to EF Education Easy Post, Dylan van Baarle will move to Jumbo Visma, and Geraint Thomas will play his last season. Tom Pidcock and other young riders are expected to improve in 2023, while Egan Bernal will return to Grand Tour racing after a terrible crash in Colombia.

Although 19 of Ganna's 21 career wins have come in time trials, he is a talented classic rider and a valuable team player in Grand Tours and stage races. His time trial skills have also helped him develop the team's equipment.

"It's exciting to be part of this team, especially the way they approach the finish line and the effort they put into development and equipment," Gana said.

"Everything is based on the goal of going faster. Whether it's the performance team, working with partners, or learning from the extensive experience within Ineos Sport. When I see the dedication of the people around me, it makes me want to give it my all.

"I still have a lot to focus on for the rest of this season and for next year. I hope to spend more of my career with this team."

Ineos Grenadiers has extended the contracts of Bernal and Pidcock in recent months, and Ganna's four-year contract extension is a new cornerstone in the team's structure. He will now be given more opportunities in the classics and short stage races.

"Filippo is one of those bike riders whose ability to generate power with the pedals is just amazing. I never get tired of watching him do time trials or lead the race at the front of the pack," explained team manager Rod Ellingworth.

"Having a talent like Filippo on the team is a huge bonus from an equipment development standpoint. Working with him in the wind tunnel and watching him run on the track, he is the reason our equipment is at the level it is today. I look forward to what we can accomplish together over the next few years."
