Vuelta a Burgos, Speed Bump Causes Massive Crash, Riders Angry

Jumbo Visma led the Vuelta a Burgos at full speed for the sprint finish in Villadiego on stage 2, but with 500m to go, sprinter David Decker lost control at a crossing (speed bump) and crashed.

Shortly thereafter, Timo Roussen, Edoardo Affini, and Chris Harper swept the podium. Because of a crash in the last 3km, all but 13 riders were awarded the same time as the stage winners.

Damien Touze (AG2R Citroën) hit a barrier and the impact caused the barrier to come apart. He was taken to the hospital but is said to be conscious.

According to the latest information from the French team, Touzet suffered head trauma and concussion from the crash. Teammate Clément Berthe suffered a broken finger and will need surgery, so he will not race the third stage.

Marc Sarrault was also involved in the 2020 Tour de Pollogne crash, but will continue racing with minor cuts and bruises.

Quick-Step Alfa Vinyl reports that Davide Ballerini has several abrasions and a hematoma on his right hip. Meanwhile, Jannik Steimle broke his right collarbone and will not be able to continue the race. The team confirmed that he will travel to Hellenthal for surgery.

Oluis Aurar is out with a fracture of the navicular bone, and Caja Rural Seguros RGA teammate David Gonzalez is also out with a dislocated elbow. According to Bora Hansgrohe, Jai Hindley and Wilco Kelderman fell in the crash, but it was only an abrasion.

Decker immediately took to social media to explain what happened: "Considering what happened, I'm fine. Nothing seems to be broken except morale, but there are plenty of scratches. I didn't see the speed bump coming and sped up on the downhill section and completely lost control. I sincerely hope that everyone involved is okay and will recover soon."

Affini expressed his anger at the team's victory celebration in the midst of the catastrophe. He said, "Before everyone starts writing bullshit here, let me be clear. I made a full effort to lead out. I saw my teammate pass me with 200 meters to go and I congratulated him. But I had no idea the carnage that was happening behind me. I feel sorry and sad for everyone involved.

As reported by Cycling News, placing speed bumps in the final kilometer of UCI Pro Series races is against the specifications set by the UCI for organizers. The rule was created after a similarly terrible crash that nearly killed Fabio Jacobsen at the 2020 Tour de Pollogne. Organizers successfully used the same finish in 2020 and warned about the obstacle in the race's technical guide, but riders were angry about the speed bumps.

Affini seems to be referring to the earlier incident in the rest of his post: "Dear @UCI_cycling, after all that happened, it's a shame to allow a finish with speed bumps in the last 800m from a super-fast section. Unacceptable."

Stage winner Roussen was also in no mood to celebrate, oozing frustration. He said, "I don't deserve to be congratulated. I hope everyone is okay after the big crash. I hope all the riders involved make a speedy recovery. We had no idea what happened behind us and that it was a crash of this magnitude. If I had known, I never would have cheered."

According to the team's press release, Jumbo Visma's sporting director, Adi Engels, "felt terrible. 'It was going perfectly for our team. It was going perfectly for our team. David didn't seem to have any broken bones, but he had quite a few scrapes. We could have been one, two, three, but in this case there is no euphoria.

The sports director saw the athletes crossing the finish line cheering, but knew immediately that this was unintentional.

"The athletes had no idea what had happened behind them. Afterwards, it sunk in. We are a top sport and we run to win, but we don't want to win like this."

Touze teammate Liliane Callemagne also pointed out the improper speed bumps, telling French television: "For once, I think it was bad luck, as well as these speed bumps. It's a downhill sprint and to put a speed bump at the 500-meter mark. It's a shame. I know there are a lot of them at the arrival point in the city, but this is a really big accident."
