The Ineos Grenadiers roster continues to rejuvenate with the signing of teenage talent Josh Tarling.
The 18-year-old Englishman is currently racing at the junior level, but plans to skip U23 and jump onto the World Tour in 2023. He has signed a three-year contract with the British team.
Tarling will not be thrown into the WorldTour schedule right away, but will balance his first steps in professional road racing with his ambitions on the track.
This is a path that Ethan Hayter has already blazed in the last few years, and Tom Pidcock also made his first breakthrough in road racing alongside his mountain biking and cyclo-cross pursuits.
Tarling is a tall, powerful ruler who won a silver medal in the junior time trial at last year's UCI Road World Championships.
"I grew up watching Team Sky and then Team Ineos and dreamed of one day riding that bus and wearing the jersey. I am excited to be a part of Grenadier and continue to learn and grow from G (Geraint Thomas), E (Ethan Hayter), F (Flippo Ganna), and the coaching staff and management.
"I realize it's a big step, but seeing the investment the team has made in a core group of young riders is the perfect environment for me to grow throughout the coming season. [I won the time trial stage at the Tour de Gironde and won the race against time at the Trophée-Saint-Molivan and the LVM Saarland Trofeo. On the track, he won the European Junior titles in the Omnium and Team Pursuit last year and last week represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games.
When he won the World Championships silver medal in Bruges last year, he said the combination of track and road was an advantage and described himself as "definitely not a sprinter," but he is an athlete who likes the war of attrition and sees promise in the classics.
"Another young British talent joins the group. Josh is only 18 years old, but he is already performing big time," said Ineos Grenadiers deputy team principal Rod Ellingworth. [His TT at last year's World Championships was one of those outstanding performances, and now we want to support Josh and help him build on those results as part of our talent program. We have a network in place to help him develop further and become the rider he wants to be."
Tarling is the second rider to sign a contract with Ineos for 2023, following fellow British talent Leo Hayter, who won the U23 Giro d'Italia in June.
In recent years, the British team's activity in the transfer market has been dominated by youngsters such as Luke Plapp, Magnus Sheffield, Carlos Rodriguez, and Ben Tourette, among a string of transfer players including brothers Pidcock and Hayter.
Ineos said goodbye to Richard Kalapas, and Adam Yates is also expected to be out of contract.
