Geraint Thomas had a nightmarish experience in the Commonwealth Games time trial.
After a podium finish at the Tour de France, Thomas returned to England for one last push at the Grand Tour as part of the Welsh national team.
In the 37.4 km time trial in Wolverhampton, he was the favorite along with Australian Rohan Dennis, but a crash on the second bend ended his hopes of a gold medal. In the end, they settled for the bronze medal.
After leaving Westpark, Thomas went too fast on the second left turn. After squeezing under braking, Thomas slid off the rear wheel and appeared to keep his balance, but his foot got caught in one of the barriers and he fell.
Thomas landed on his feet with a loud yell, got up, and reeled in the chain that appeared to be jammed. Thomas immediately started to run, but he was about 30 seconds behind.
"We were all the same, but I had never run a closed road course properly, so I basically got too hot," Thomas told the BBC after the awards ceremony.
"I thought I was sweeping left. I got caught on the barrier leg on the exit and had a hard time getting the chain on and my brakes bent a little bit. It was my mistake and I can't blame it on that.
Thomas arrived at the first intermediate checkpoint at 8.9km in second place and was clearly riding strong.
Thomas continued to run strong, but as he passed Dudley and approached the halfway point, he raised his arms and called for the team car. He then began talking on the race radio, took his hand off the aerobar, and tapped the microphone on the device to communicate with the team.
"I was trying to get some more information about the corner," he said. 'It's totally different when there are barriers.
[19.2] At the second checkpoint, Thomas was still 32 seconds behind Dennis, losing just over a second during the 10 km, and at the third checkpoint at 32.8 km, he remained in second place, 32 seconds behind Dennis.Dennis began to lag slightly later in the course, and Thomas made up a few seconds to finish 28 seconds behind. Fred Wright, however, ran strong early on and beat Thomas by 3 seconds at the third checkpoint to take the silver medal, pushing Thomas to the bronze medal.
"I just had to refocus and get into the running. Honestly, my legs were pretty good.
"I guess after the crash I was a little adrenaline pumped and ran too hard the first time. But getting a medal is an okay result."
