EF Education-TIBCO-SVB announces that it will provide year-round support to two-time US National Cyclocross Champion Clara Honsinger as the Women's World Tour team begins its cyclocross program for the 2022-2023 season.
The program will be held at the Cyclocross World Cup in New York City.
Honsinger continues to impress in 'cross while transitioning to the road full time with her US-based team in 2021. Her cyclocross team, Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld, abruptly disbanded in March after 16 seasons. Last year, Honsinger took seven of the team's 35 podiums, including a defense of her US Cyclocross Elite women's title and two other wins.
"She races Cannondale in cyclocross and on the road, so it was a natural fit," said team founder and EF Education-TIBCO-SVB owner Linda Jackson.
"After the cyclocross season, we plan to integrate Clara with the team so we will be able to fine-tune her road preparation more precisely. Clara has already proven that her cyclocross skills translate to road success. We look forward to seeing more of her in the future."
Cyclocross was Honsinger's introduction to bike racing, and the 20-year-old competed in elite races almost across the country, including a World Cup race in Hoogerheide. It was during the 2017-2018 season that she won a silver medal in the women's U23 category at the U.S. Championships in Reno, Nevada. The following year, she won the U23 title in Louisville.
"I've always wanted to do my best in the road program, but I also want to show up for the cyclocross season and there's a little bit of tension in between," Honsinger said in a team statement. "I think that's one of the great things about being under the same program, having it all on one team, there's a sense of security that you can work for the team from both sides. We are all working toward one goal and that is to get good results for EF Education-TIBCO-SVB."
Last season, when road cycling made a North American comeback a year after COVID-19 closed, Honsinger finished fourth overall in the fall Joe Martin Stage Race in Arkansas. He repeated that performance this spring, finishing in the top 10 in the road race at the USA Cycling Pro Road Championships and winning the team time trial at the CIC Tour de Pyrenees this week.
Being the exclusive rider for EF Education-TIBCO-SVB is a plus for the Oregon native's yearly calendar and training. Honsinger noted that Christel Hellemans, logistics manager for the road team, will play an important role in her two-discipline efforts.
"Christel has a lot of experience in cyclocross. It's great to have both the team's foundation and Christel's experience put together in a cool program," Honsinger said. 'I think it will lead to better results. It will make us stronger and more fit, both on the road and in cyclocross."
[18In January, Honsinger made history by winning the Coppencross, becoming the first American rider to do so. A few months later, she put that experience to good use on the cobblestones of Belgium, joining a breakaway group over 100 km in the Tour of Flanders. Her road contract runs through 2023.
Honsinger will compete off-road as EF Education-TIBCO-SVB in the Go Cross in Virginia in September.
